Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño turned in a card for 68 shots in the second round of the Hotel Fitness Championship, first test of the Web.com Tour Finals, and made the cut. He's already made it past the first step.
Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño started with a round for par in his participation in the Hotel Fitness Championship, first stop of the Web.com Tour Finals. It was a survival round of golf and the Spanish golfer managed to at least leave the duel in a tie.
Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño will begin the Web.com Tour finals this Thursday, a demanding and selective process where the Madrid native will attempt to recover the rights to play in the PGA Tour. It’s not an easy task, quite the opposite in fact. The level in each one of the four tests that this mini-tour is composed of is incredibly high, in the presence of numerous American Tour winners, and a few major winners, such as Lucas Glover.
Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño will play in the Web.com Tour Finals in September, a mini-series of four tournaments where he’ll aim at reclaiming the PGA Tour card. The Spanish golfer lost his rights yesterday after the last regular tournament of the American tour.
Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño finished off an excellent third round at the Wyndham Championship with a card for 67 shots and will fight to the very end to maintain his right to play in the PGA Tour. There’s nothing and no one that can stand in his way now. After a low-key, dismal season where it seemed as though nothing was going right, the Spanish golfer created options to be able to continue in the American tour up until the very last day. A true soldier.
A painful three-putt on the 12th hole of the round could have caused Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño to miss the cut at the Wyndham Championship with six holes to go. It was, on top of that, his second consecutive bogey. Rough. He found himself in a tight place. It was a very complicated moment in which all the ghosts could have come back to haunt him, the difficulties from throughout the season, the struggle and the fight with no mercy along with the desperate situation to maintain the card. It’s human to make the decision to thrown in the towel and to say it’s enough. But this wasn’t an option for Gonzalo. Quite the contrary.
