Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño will play in the Web.com Tour Finals in September, a mini-series of four tournaments where he’ll aim at reclaiming the PGA Tour card. The Spanish golfer lost his rights yesterday after the last regular tournament of the American tour.
Gonzalo shot a 70 in the last round of the Wyndham Championship and finished in 38º place, insufficient to be able to reach the 125º position in the FedEX Cup, the last place where those who maintain the card for the year go. The Madrid native ended up in 165º place and now he’ll play for his imminent return as a second chance.
They’re four tournaments which will begin in September. The top 25 of this mini-order of merit will be awarded the PGA Tour card for next year. Without a doubt, losing the card wasn’t Fernández-Castaño’s objective, but he calmly accepts this turn of events. It’s something that can happen and he’s prepared to face the alternatives. Now he’ll try to recover the card in the Web.com Tour Finals and he’ll alternate that with whatever he is able to accomplish in the Europea Tour, which will be a lot, as he is a seven-time European winner.
