Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño accumulated eight more points in the third round of the Barracuda Championship and is now in 23º place, seven from the top ten and sixteen from leader, J.J. Henry.
The Spanish golfer had another solid performance on the Montreux course, in Nevada. In fact, he moved up in the rankings and is now in the top 25 of the tournament; however, the high bar set by the golfers in the lead will obligate him to go all in on Sunday in order to position himself up front at the finish line.
Gonzalo isn’t going to save the PGA Tour card this week, but he can pave the way for the Wyndham Championship, last regular tournament of the season that will be held within two weeks. All the points accumulated in the Barracuda will mean less work for Greensboro.
Fernández-Castaño is playing well. He’s reached the most delicate point in the season and is managing to get good results. But’s it’s not to rule out the possibility that everything goes well this Sunday and the Madrid native walks away on top, far from it. He’s more than capable and has the will and the golf to be able to do so.
The victory seems impossible because those in the lead are on track to tie or beat the record. The best score obtained in this tournament and established by Geoff Ogilvy last year (49 points) is in serious danger. J.J. Henry already has 41 points and David Toms and Jonas Blixt are just one point behind.
