Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño made the cut in the Barracuda Championship. It’s his fifth consecutive cut, a noteworthy statistic that perfectly demonstrates the solidity the Spanish golfer has worked up towards in his game at this clutch point in the season. Few players in the PGA Tour are handling the ball better from tee to green. He came out to demonstrate this feat once again in the second round.
Gonzalo caught ten fairways and thirteen greens, made five birdies and a bogey and racked up nine more points. His current total is 16, positioned in the top 30 of the tournament with the entire weekend ahead to get that impulse he needs and to fight for the victory. That being said, he needs to go full speed ahead over the weekend and to get lots of birdies under his belt. The top ten is just five points away, which, when translated to the modified Stableford lingo, the special format of the Barracuda Championship, means that’s he’s just two and a half birdies away from that point bracket. The leaders are ten points away, in other words, five birdies.
There is a notable difference, but nowhere near unattainable. Gonzalo has, in fact, demonstrated that he is capable of making lots of birdies on the Montreux course in Reno in both rounds. To be exact, he’s made eight in two days. It would be a good amount for this Saturday.
Gonzalo will play starting at 8:35 pm, Spanish Peninsular time, together with British veteran Brian Davis.
