Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño started with a round for par in his participation in the Hotel Fitness Championship, first stop of the Web.com Tour Finals. It was a survival round of golf and the Spanish golfer managed to at least leave the duel in a tie.
Gonzalo made four birdies and four bogeys after a fateful day on shots to green. The Madrid native caught eight greens, stats that perfectly explain the battle that was unleashed today against the Sycamore Hills Golf Club, designed by Jack Nicklaus in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
The end result of par after only having caught eight greens should be considered a job well done. Not in vain, he managed to get six out of ten recoveries and was able to take advantage of half the opportunities for birdie that were presented. He more than saved the day in this first round.
Gonzalo is just six shots away from leaders, Tommy Gainey and Emiliano Grillo, not a very significant lead if we keep in mind that there are still 54 holes left to play. There’s a lot of room to work with. It’s important to remember that we’re still just in the first round of the four tournaments that make up the Web.com Tour Finals.
Gonzalo will go out to play the second round this Friday starting at 8:24 am local time, 2:24 pm in Spain.
