Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño left the WGC Bridgestone Invitational with a round of 74 on Sunday, preventing him from continuing to climb the ladder that he laid a foundation for on Friday and Saturday. The Madrid native finished with a total of 291 shots, 62º place.
...and that's after having rained on the first day over the Firestone CC and, in fact, the round was suspended for three hours due to a lightening storm. However, during this round that was pushed forward because of the storm, Gonzalo demonstrated that he had already forgotten and moved past the mishap from the first day.
Gonzalo never backs down, and that alone deserves acknowledgment. After a dark, difficult day, the inertia could have gotten the best of him for lack of motivation. Not even close. He would never let that bring him down, but less so in Bridgestone, a tour date of the WGC with no cut in which 54 more holes is sufficient to cover ground, and most of all, to get the good vibes back.
After the uplifting fourth place in Canada and having secured the PGA Tour card for next season, the week looked optimistic for Gonzalo to take on the Bridgestone Invitational, date of the WGC, with high spirits and good energy. However, the morning threatened the Madrid native with its ominous clouds, who ended the round with a painful +9.
Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño can rest easy. Seven months after the start of the season, the Spanish golfer has finally locked down his PGA Tour card. And he did it in Canada for an incredible week, finishing with a proud fourth place, which skyrocketed him to 107th in the FedEX Cup.
Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño finished with a 69 in the third round of the RBC Canadian Open, maintaining his position in the top ten of the tournament, ready and willing to lock in his best performance of the season to get even that much closer to the PGA tour card.
