Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño will compete this week in the RBC Canadian Open of the PGA Tour. It's not only his first time playing in this tournament, which starts today at the Blue Course at the Royal Montreal Golf Club in Quebec, but it's also his first time setting foot on this part of North America.
Thus, it's a debut in multiple aspects for the Spanish Golfer, who arrived to Canada last Sunday night directly from Liverpool. Gonzalo will play starting at 13.20, Spanish time, together with Scott McCarron and Kevin Chappell.
It's not one of the bigger weeks of the year for the PGA Tour as far as participation, although there is no shortage, as always, of good players. Dustin Johnson will be there, as well as Brandt Snedeker (reigning champion), Jim Furyk, Luke Donald and Graeme McDowell, to name a few. In addition, something that not many people know: the Canadian Open is one of the most traditional tournaments of the American tour. It's been held for over more than 100 years now.
Gonzalo will attempt to accumulate a good amount of points in the FedEX Cup to reach his objective of a spot among the top 125 players before playoffs. As of now, he's only 41 points away from that position, the fine line that marks the cut between those who will maintain the card and those who will have to fight to get it back.
