After the uplifting fourth place in Canada and having secured the PGA Tour card for next season, the week looked optimistic for Gonzalo to take on the Bridgestone Invitational, date of the WGC, with high spirits and good energy. However, the morning threatened the Madrid native with its ominous clouds, who ended the round with a painful +9.
Starting off on the 10th, the Spanish golfer made two bogeys on the 11th and the 14th, but the round really went downhill on the 16th, when the third shot landed in the water and ended in a double bogey. Four consecutive pars evened out the round, until the thorn in his spine, the 3rd hole and the twelfth of the day of the Firestone CC, crossed his path.
Gonzalo placed the ball in the fairway off the bat over 301 yards, but from that point, the cavalry fired up after landing three times in a row in the water and leaving the green with an outrageous quintuple bogey.
It took a big toll on Gonzalo and, after a bad shot off the tee on the 4th that ended up on the cart path, he made a double bogey, raising the score to a +11. Despite everything, he didn't let it get him down and was able to land two birdies in the end, putting from far away: the first on the 5th, the 14th hole, with a putt from 52 feet away, and the second, on the second-to-last hole, putting from 37 feet away.
The positive outcome is that he has 54 holes left to play, now that in Bridgestone, there is no cut, which means there's a lot of room left to improve and, above all, to get the good vibes back that put him at fourth place last Sunday in Canada.
