Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño finished with a 69 in the third round of the RBC Canadian Open, maintaining his position in the top ten of the tournament, ready and willing to lock in his best performance of the season to get even that much closer to the PGA tour card.
Even more than the results, than the top ten and that second place, for example, is just five shots away, the best part of this week is that Gonzalo has demonstrated that he has answers when things start to get twisted. He’s always put his sweat and blood into the game, willing to make sacrifices. All of this goes above and beyond his call of duty. But it’s true that when the round would start to get complicated, it was difficult for him to get back into the rhythm.
This week is different, and yesterday’s round was a clear example. The Spanish golfer made a double bogey on the 9th and came back with a spectacular birdie on the 10th. The second setback of the round, a tough setback, was the bogey on the 12th (par 5). The Madrid native went to tee-off with his eyes on the birdie, and coming out with a bogey isn’t easy to accept. But Gonzalo’s response was extraordinary, with birdies on the 13th and the 14th. He went on to putt for a birdie on the last few holes of the round, but the ball just didn’t want to land in the hole, despite the fact that it always came really close.
The last mishap of the day came on the 16th hole. Gonzalo broke the driver after hitting the ball right off the bat, and the referees forbid him from using it on Sunday. It’s unfortunate, now that he finally felt comfortable with that club.
Gonzalo will play starting at 15.45 (Spanish time), since the schedule has been pushed forward due to bad weather.
