Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño began his journey at the Open Championship at Hoylake with a 74. The vibes aren't great, as it seems as though fate is repeating itself along with the same patterns that have been present throughout the season, but even so, the results aren't too bad.
In fact, the Spanish golfer is just one shot away from the provisional cut after yesterday afternoon's session in the worst conditions of the day; the course was much harder and the breeze picked up considerably.
Gonzalo confronted the challenge head on, and got off to a great start. He came out with birdies on the 1st and the 5th, but a bad shot on the 6th and a double bogey on the 7th brought everything to an abrupt halt. The old ghosts came back to haunt him. “Sometimes it's difficult for me to turn things around when they start to go downhill. It's going to be tough to make the cut, my swing as it is on shaky ground, and on a course that's made to be demanding and unforgiving like Royal Liverpool, you pay the price”, he noted.
The goal is to make it past the cut and to have the whole weekend ahead to regain confidence. Things are looking alright, and if it the weather turns ugly tomorrow, it's not necessarily a negative thing for Gonzalo as he handles the wind well and is able to resist against strong blows.
