Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño left the WGC Bridgestone Invitational with a round of 74 on Sunday, preventing him from continuing to climb the ladder that he laid a foundation for on Friday and Saturday. The Madrid native finished with a total of 291 shots, 62º place.
He didn't have any luck with the draw. The first games of the day suffered the worst weather of the round, with torrential rain that forced play to be suspended for more than an hour. At that point, Gonzalo hadn't even had time to finish half the round.
He rode out the storm as best he could, but under extreme conditions and far from the first positions made it complicated to muster up the necessary concentration and motivation. In any case, Fernández-Castaño played well from tee to green and it was the putter that kept him from finishing with a lower score today. He was, according to the statistics of the PGA Tour, practically just two or three shots away from the average of the rest of the players on the greens.
Gonzalo made six bogeys and two birdies, coincidentally on two par 3s (7th and 12th), after two incredible shots that left the ball just one meter from the hole. A point worth mentioning in the story is that he landed birdies on these two holes on Saturday.
The next date on Gonzalo's calendar is the PGA Championship, the fourth big one of the season that will be held at the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville.
