Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño (-6) already started a few hours before the beginning of the second round in the Web.com Tour Qualifying School, final stage. “Today I’m going to give it all I’ve got in tribute to Tommy Horton”, he assured on Twitter. Horton, golf legend and coach to many golfers, one of whom is Gonzalo himself, had died a few hours before. There couldn’t have been a better motivating factor.
The truth is that Mr. Horton would be proud of the round the Spanish golfer played. He shot a 67 on the Cattail course and is now in the top 45, which would allow him to bypass the first re-ranking of the Web.com Tour and secure him a spot in the first eight tournaments of the season. Additionally, he’s now just four shots from the top ten, which would guarantee twelve tournaments and seven from first place, the Holy Grail of the School, seeing as how it would guarantee the entire calendar season.
Gonzalo had a pristine performance once again on the par 5s. Although he made one bogey, he landed two birdies and an eagle on the other four. His partial score after two days is seven under par on these holes. There are still 36 holes to fight for, in search of at least that top ten that will allow him to rest at ease for more than half the season. Gonzalo will continue to push forward, for Horton and for many other reasons. Definitely not in lack of inspiration.
