Gonzalo Fernández Castañó (-3) made the cut in the Wyndham Championship after shooting a 68 in the second round, although he finished the day at ten shots away from the leaders tied for first, Ryan Armour and Webb Simpson. While he’s still in the running, there’s still hope, but the Madrid native will have to fight hard to make the second cut on Saturday, due to the fact that 85 players made it past. But his tenacity and persistence are remarkable, not giving up when things don’t turn out exactly how he had hoped.
His game continues to be solid and steady, as he caught more than seventy percent of the regulation greens in the first two rounds at the Sedgefield Country Club. The same as Thursday, his first nine holes were fantastic, with an eagle on the 5th hole, par 5, where he placed the ball just over a meter away from the hole on the second shot. But from there, on the back nine, he was unable to maintain the positive inertia.
On a course where birdies are abundant, the Spanish golfer will have to hand in two very low cards to keep the dream alive. Remember: he needs to place first or second to maintain the rights to play in the PGA Tour; and to win the Wyndham over the past years, the average score has been around -17 or -18. Evidently, it’s not exact, because the winning score depends on many factors, but it is indicative.
