Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (24 points) needs a stratospheric score in the last round of the Barracuda Championship in order to get into the fight for the win on the Montreux Golf and Country Club course in Reno. The good news is that he’s ready and willing.
The Spanish golfer has shown once again this Saturday that he can get really low-scoring rounds on the Nevada course. He made five birdies, but it could have perfectly been nine or ten, and he only slipped up twice with two bogeys, of which one was completely avoidable. His long game is on point and fine-tuned, which means that a stellar round in the Barracuda is only possible if the putter is hot.
It’s true that he made some great putts yesterday, two, one for birdie (eight meters) and the other for par (three meters), but he needs to make a few more alterations to establish himself in the tournament at 20 points, the amount he needs this Sunday to have the opportunity to finish among the top 5. Gonzalo’s game isn’t far off from the goal.
He is currently in 22nd place, just five points from the top ten and thirteen from leader, British golfer Greg Owen. This Sunday he’ll go into the round with the sole intention of making birdies. He’ll play starting at 8:12 am, local time, 5:12 pm in Spain. The schedules were moved up because of the bad weather forecast.
