Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño finished the first round of the RBC Heritage at Hilton Head with a 74. He's currently in 92ndplace, two shots away from the provisional cut. Luck wasn't on the Madrid native's side as far as time slots and the way the schedule was divided. He got the afternoon game, when the wind came on strong on the Harbour Town Links course.
It's a tense course that truly puts the golfers to the test when the wind starts up. Gonzalo's game wasn't very well refined from tee to green either, especially with the irons, and he had to roll up his sleeves and shake it off to carry on for the back nine. He managed to stay on his feet, and he doesn't need a miracle to make it through the cut. As of now, he's just two shots away from making the provisional cut, although he could easily come out with a +2 or +3 if the tough weather conditions persist.
Gonzalo made two birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey after hitting the ball to the water on hole 14. He mustered up some strength and was able to recover to stay afloat even though he only caught about thirty percent of the greens. Anything below par tomorrow morning, when in theory the weather conditions are much more permitting, even though the temperatures will be much lower, will secure a spot for the weekend.
There are three golfers leading the tournament at the moment with a -5: Matt Kuchar, Scott Langley and William McGirt. They all have a two-shot advantage over Harris English. Fernández-Castaño will play the second round starting at 14:30 (Spanish time).
