Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño left the Augusta National through the usual route, Magnolia Lane. Enchanting, almost mythical. It's a short stretch, but long enough to think. And what was he contemplating? Well, that would be about his return next year. He's got that clear. He loves the Masters and wouldn't give it up for anything in the world.
This time, he's leaving Atlanta behind with the sensation of unfinished business to resolve. Gonzalo finished Sunday's session with a 74, the same as Saturday, for a total of +4, 26th place. It's not bad, far from it, but the Madrid native knows it could have been much better, especially after the 69 he pulled off on Friday.
However, his putt decided not to cooperate all week, mostly on the last day. “It was a disaster. I missed a put from two hand-lengths away on the first hole, and that destroyed my confidence”, explains the Spanish golfer who made four greens and three putts throughout the week.
Bubba Watson won the tournament (-8), who clearly dominated on the last nine holes on Sunday thanks to his clean shots. He beat Jonas Blixt and Jordan Spieth with a three-shot advantage, two rookies who have demonstrated their ability to hold their own, and to keep up with the game.
Gonzalo will be back at it this week on Hilton Head at the RBC Heritage of the PGA Tour.
