Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño will play the weekend of the Masters at Augusta for the third consecutive year in a row. The Madrid native doesn't know what it means to pack up and go home early when it comes to traveling to the first major tournament of the year, and those are big words.
Gonzalo finished with the fifth best card of the day (69) and has managed to climb his way up to the top of the rankings for fifteenth place, with a grand total of an even PAR, just one shot away from the top ten.
The extra time he spent polishing his game yesterday after finishing the first round paid off. Today he showed up a lot better with the driver, caught more fairways, kept the ball in play longer, and consequently, he had much better shots to green, leaving more options for a birdie.
At this point, Gonzalo won't back down. “We're well positioned, not far from the leader and with 36 holes to go, there are other objectives like finishing in the top ten. We'll see”, he affirmed at the end of the day.
On another note, as a funny story, Gonzalo told us that yesterday he left Augusta so late that the locker room was closed and he couldn't pick up his accreditation. “Good thing they felt bad for me and they let me in this morning without the credential”.
Gonzalo put the finishing touch on the 18th. Ten attempts later, he was able to get a par on the last hole. The last nine times he tried, he got a bogey. A nice comeback.
Bubba Watson leads the tournament (-7), with a three-shot advantage over Thomas Bjorn, Adam Scott, Jonas Blixt and Jordan Spieth.
