Big week of golf and a big week for Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño. If there's just one tournament highlighted and marked in red on the Madrid native's calendar, it's the Masters at Augusta.
It's the Spanish golfer's third consecutive appearance at the Atlanta course. The first year he made the cut, the second he made it to the qualifying rounds and now he's set on improving his results from last year. He's got that part clear: “I'm taking the tournament like a long marathon of 72 holes. I know I'll have a tough time and that it won't be easy, but I'm going to put everything I've got into it to get a good ranking”, he explains.
Right along with him is Dave Stockton as another integral force and a part of the team. The mind control and putting guru is helping Gonzalo, who is also accompanied by his other two trainers, Mariano Bartolomé and José Carlos Gutiérrez. As of now, Gonzalo feels he has refined his short game, a fundamental part of the Masters. He's even made an adjustment to his putt, and he's noticeably better on the greens. “We've taken a few inches off the putter, to be exact, so that the stance is more comfortable and more relaxed. We got great vibes after the first day of practice, although now of course, it's a question of putting it into practice at the tournament where it really counts”, he says.
Gonzalo will play this Thursday starting at 18.42 (Spanish Peninsular time) for the first round of the Masters together with American golfer Derek Ernst and Korean golfer Sang Moon Bae.
