Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño shot a 71 in the third round of the Final Stage of the Web.com Tour Qualifying School. A score for par allowed the Madrid native to go up a good handful of places in the rankings, although this week’s real objective is practically out of reach now.
Gonzalo shot a 71 on the Champion course, the same course where the Honda Classic is held every February, one of the most important regular tournaments of the PGA Tour. The Spanish golfer’s end result today was similar to that of yesterday’s: three birdies, one bogey and a double bogey. The mistakes continue to cost him for a game in which during the the majority of the round, he was solid and on point.
Gonzalo now stands in the top 100 in the rankings, but he’s still far from the top ten, the spots that would truly allow him to improve his actual status in the second US tour, in other words, to avoid a re-ranking and to secure more tournaments. Now, he’s eleven shots away from tenth place. It seems impossible to think that it can be done in just one day, but the last round will be good for boosting confidence if nothing else. Gonzalo will try to shoot less than a 70 on the Fazio Course in order to walk away with a good taste in his mouth.
