Gonzalo Fernández Castaño had a tough day at the the office at the premiere of the OHL Classic at Mayakoba, PGA Tour tournament held on El Camaleón course in Playa del Carmen.
The Madrid native shot a 76 with three birdies, four bogeys and two double bogeys. It’s true that Gonzalo did not play well, too inconsistent from tee to green, but it’s not any less true that his punishment was way too harsh. It was one of those rounds in which everything that could have gone wrong, turned out even worse.
Gonzalo never gave in. He kept at the hunt and chase for the shot that would turn things around, a birdie that would change the entire panorama, a twist of fate. Good proof of that would be those two final consecutive birdies on the 6th and 7th holes. He also had an opportunity on the 8th, but it slipped away and he ended up with another bogey on the 9th. Too harsh.
Gonzalo will attempt to make a comeback this Friday in the second round. His golf is on the upward rise and he is eager to prove it at Mayakoba. He’ll go out to play at two in the afternoon, local Spanish time.
