Gonzalo Fernández Castaño shot a 69 to start the season off in the first round of the Sanderson Farms Championship, PGA Tour tournament which shares the spotlight this week with the WGC HSBC Championship. The Spanish golfer came out strong on the Country Club of Jackson course in Mississippi, with very favorable playing conditions, allowing for low cards such as Roberto Castro’s for 62 shots.
Gonzalo exhibited a solid game, with few big errors and steady around the greens. He only made one bogey, coming back on four out of five chances to recover. The work he’s been putting in these past weeks has quickly had an effect on his play and is reflected in his score. He was also fine-tuned on the greens, gaining almost two shots on average off the rest of the course with the putter.
Gonzalo is now in 42º place in the tournament after the first round, three shots from the top ten. This Friday he’ll play in the afternoon session, starting at 6:15 pm, local time on the Iberian Peninsula.
