Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño has already started 'Operation Comeback' as of Sunday night. The Madrid native has finished his participation in the Web.com Tour Finals on the Dye's Valley course at TPC Sawgrass. In the end it was not meant to be and, although the Spanish golfer was much closer to reaching his goal than what the cold, hard rankings reflect, he was unable to recover the PGA Tour card.
Gonzalo finished the Web.com Tour Championship with a card for 72 shots, for a total of +5, 68º place. That score put him at an overall ranking of 54th place in the four tournaments that make up the the Web.com Tour Finals. Remember, the 25 top-ranking golfers would earn their rights back to the PGA Tour for next season.
In any case, having already come to terms with the disappointment, the Madrid native is already back on his feet and looking ahead toward future prospects. He will participate in the next Web.com Tour, and the PGA Tour and European Tour events that he can access by invitation, which are certainly not few and far between. Gonzalo will have a lot of doors open to him, as is fit for a multi-winner of the European Tour. The 'Operation Comeback' is already in motion and very few contest to the notion that he will end up successful sooner rather than later. What's clear is that he won't be brought down due to lack of effort or dedication.
Gonzalo will now be examining the tour calendar under a microscope. The Web.com Tour season doesn't begin until the end of January, which is why the most probable course of events from now until then, apart from resting and preparing for next season, will be his participation in the European Tour tests. Gonzalo will be back, he's already counting down the hours.
