Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño made one thing very clear in the first round of the Barracuda Championship: he knows how to work the course. There are birdies on the Montreux course in Nevada and the Spanish golfer found them on the first nine holes. However, his game lacked continuity on the back nine in order to have finished higher up in the rankings.
Fernández-Castaño turned in a card for seven points in the first round of the Barracuda. He currently stands in 48º place, eleven points from Zach Sucher’s outstanding initial performance. Gonzalo could have been really close to the leader’s score, in fact he had opportunities to do so, but the putt just wasn’t there on the back nine (holes 1 to 9).
He started the day off nicely (on the 10th with a birdie from 15 meters out), with four birdies on the first nine holes. His 16-point projection cost him an arm and a leg. He continued on to create options starting at hole 1, but they stopped going in. He had up to three clear opportunities for birdie from less than two meters away and he missed a putt for par from one meter out. On top of that, he made three putts on the 8th. A shame, although the positive conclusion to be drawn is that his game is on point and if he manages to have a solid day on the putt, he could end up with an impressive total of points.
Gonzalo will play in the second round of the Barracuda today starting at 7:33 am, local time, 4:33 pm on the Spanish mainland.
