It was tough for Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño to get on track in the third round of the Quicken Loans National. He wasn’t sharp off the tee, but it wasn’t a problem when it came time to turn in a reputable card of 69 shots, leaving him in 21st place, with a total of seven under par and four shots from the top ten.
Gonzalo was far from being on ‘solid ground’ on three separate occasions in 18 holes, an experience that’s synonymous of coming up short and headaches. However, The Madrid native found a way to counteract this modest day in the long run with good results. He hit really good irons to green, both from the rough as well as from the fairway bunkers on the Robert Trent Jones GF in Virginia.
It was clear from the start that it would be a complicated day at the office. He saved a good par on the 2nd hole, and he didn’t catch his first fairway until the 7th. Even so, he had already made two birdies by that point. His short game was like clock work and his putter was much more on point than in the previous days.
It was a professional round of great tenacity, on its way to being a more than good game of golf only to be hindered by way of the 12th hole. He made five birdies, one bogey and one double bogey. There’s a lot to do to reach the top ten. It’s not an easy path, but there have been powerful rounds, like the 61 shot by Troy Merritt yesterday from which he came up out of nowhere to the top position in the rankings. Gonzalo will go out to play this Sunday together with Canadian golfer Adam Hadwin starting at 6:15 pm Spanish peninsular time.
