Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño shot a 71 in the second round of the Quicken Loans National, PGA Tour date held on the Robert Trent Jones GC in Virginia. The Spanish golfer made his fourth consecutive cut with room to spare, although he has gone down slightly in the rankings compared to Thursday. He currently stands at 19º place with a total of five under par, three shots from the top ten and six from the leader, Ryo Ishikawa.
Gonzalo made three birdies and three bogeys in a round where his long game, having been substantially better than the average, wasn’t as effective as Thursday. He started off really well, on the 10th hole, catching fairways and greens. He began with a birdie on his first hole, but the sand tricks played on Gonzalo by the bunkers cast a mean spell on him. He fell prey to seven bunkers throughout the round, varying from fairway bunkers and bunkers located next to the green, three of which accounted for the three errors he had in the round. That’s golf. Thursday he shot an eagle from the bunker from around 25 meters away from the hole (his shot of the day) and Friday it was time to suffer.
Despite not being as solid from tee to green, he continues to be one of the best of the tournament up to this point. However, he needs to refine his putt in order to maintain the rhythm of birdies necessary to be able to succeed in the fight for the win this Sunday.
There are 36 holes left to play and lots of room to work in order to climb his way back up again to the top of the rankings and to get that push he needs in Virginia to achieve his objective. Today it’s time to shine. Gonzalo will go out to play at 5:41 pm with Arjun Atwal.
