Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño continues on the fight to maintain the American tour card in 2015. It's not going to be easy, but it wasn't last year either and he was able to pull through, just after the US Open to be exact, so it would be safe to say that we are going into the part of the season that could defined as 'Gonzalo territory'.
The Spanish golfer made the cut in the Barbasol Championship, and although he didn't finish as high in the rankings as he would have liked due to a somewhat inconsistent weekend, he managed to pull off an unprecedented feat up until now in 2015. He passed the third consecutive cut in the PGA Tour, a stretch he hadn’t been able to achieve since May-June of last year, in THE PLAYERS, Memorial and FedEX Cup. He also did it in the RBC Canadian Open, WGC Bridgestone and PGA Championship, in the summer, although it can’t be factored in because in the second one, there isn’t really a cut.
His best stretch of cuts in 2015 was in the beginning of the season. There were five consecutive tournaments between the Honda Classic and the RBC Heritage, and the sequence included none other than the Masters in Augusta.
Gonzalo, who finished in 61º place in the Barbasol Championship with a total of -3 and four rounds of 70, 68, 72 and 71 shots, is now just over halfway through being able to maintain the card. In order to finish among the top 125 of the FedEX Cup, those who maintain the card, must be situated before the playoffs at around 450 points. The Madrid native is now at 202. He needs to make significant advancements in the upcoming tournaments. He still has opportunities and it’s important to remember that we are now entering in Gonzalo territory.
