Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño finished his participation in The Greenbrier Classic with 71 shots for a total score of six below par. The Madrid native ended up in 37º place. It wasn’t the Sunday he’d hoped for, although there are more positive conclusions to be drawn than negative.
Gonzalo played very well from tee to green once again, and just one inopportune moment on the greens kept him from placing much higher in the rankings. His long game was among the best at The Old White TPC. In fact, he finished in 14º place in that respect, while the weak spot was with his putter. In this area he finished in 72º place. Yesterday he let three putts escape out from under his fingertips from less than one and a half meters away, two for par and one for birdie.
In any case, it was his third best score of the season, only topped by 16º in the Byron Nelson and 27º in Puerto Rico. And the evolution of his game has been nothing but positive. In his last thirteen rounds in the PGA Tour, seven were below 70 shots.
He’s got the right idea and all that needs to happen now are for the pieces to fall into place one week in order to reach his objective. The next event will be the John Deere Classic, PGA Tour.
