Gonzalo Fernández Castaño will return to competition this week after an obligatory break during the US Open. The Madrid native would have liked to experience first-hand what those nasty greens of Chambers Bay are like, but it couldn’t happen and as of now the objective is to return to the major where he’s shined the most up until this moment. Not in vain, he made the top ten in Merion in 2013.
US Open over and done, all energy is on the Travelers Championship, the most important event for Gonzalo that starts this Thursday on TPC River Highlands course in Connecticut. Another step forward in his time-ticking career in order to solidify the American tour card for next season. He’ll go out to play the first round tomorrow starting at 6.35 pm, Spanish Peninsular time, together with Spencer Levin and Jonathan Byrd.
The Travelers is a PGA Tour tournament that comes with an extra reward. Playing well in Connecticut not only is worth its weight in gold for the card, Gonazalo’s first and foremost objective, but can also be worth a ticket to the Open Championship in St. Andrews, third major of the season held in July. The four best qualified within the top 12, who aren’t already qualified for the British, will earn a spot for the Old Course.
