Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño did not make the cut at the Memorial Tournament. A dark afternoon at the Muirfield Village Golf Club ended in the Spanish golfer winding up out of the tournament after turning in a card for 78 shots, a total of +3.
The day started off twisted and it never quite managed to unravel itself. Gonzalo started the round with three bogeys on the first four holes. A significant hindrance that he just couldn’t quite get past, especially because the putt wasn’t on his side at all in this second round. An average of more than two putts per regulation green says it all.
The hole closed on Gonzalo, who was unable to make a birdie on Friday, impacted by a tough blow at the start of the back nine while trying to make up for the first nine and start with a clean slate. He began with a double bogey and a bogey which practically sealed the fate of the round. He continued to fight, that’s for sure, but none of the putts were going in, those that have the capability to change the entire dynamics of the round. Gonzalo will participate in the pregame of the US Open this coming Monday in Memphis, and afterwards will play in the FedEX St. Jude Classic.
