Gonzalo Fernández Castaño is determined to make his painful withdrawal from the Spanish Open worth his while. The Madrid native got off to a great start in the Wells Fargo Championship, with a card for 71 in the always complicated Quail Hollow in Charlotte.
Gonzalo made four birdies, three of which were on pars 5s, going by the instruction manual on how to minimize the number of shots on such a difficult course like this one. It was a solid round of golf, structured, without having caught too many fairways, but incredible on shots to the hole, catching almost seventy percent of the greens.
He finished with a round of 71 and didn’t have too many other options as far as finishing with more or less shots. On the 10th, a good option for birdie slipped away from a little more than two meters out, but on the 12th he sank an amazing putt from three meters out. Tight match.
Gonzalo, at -1, is six shots away from the leader, Robert Streb, three from the top ten and one above the cut mark. He’s in a good position with the advantage that today he’ll play in the morning, opening up the field, starting at 1:00 pm, Spanish Peninsular time.
