Gonzalo Fernández Castaño hasn’t exactly had the best of luck throughout this stretch of the season. The Spanish golfer shot a 71 in the second round of THE PLAYERS Championship and missed the cut by one, with a total of +1.
Gonzalo began the round with a bogey on the 10th, but was quickly able to turn things around with what was possibly the best golf sequence of the season, both because of the final results and the place where it happened, the always demanding TPC Sawgrass. Fernández Castaño made five birdies in a row on the following six holes, placing him at four under par for the day which put him at -2, leaving him with room to spare to make the cut.
Things were looking up, but Gonzalo’s long game started to unravel. He missed a lot of fairways from there up until the end and it was an incredibly difficult task to create options for birdies. Bad news if you don’t land birdies on a course where bogeys happen as punishment. The Madrid native made three, just enough to miss the cut by one, which he already had in the bag from all the important plays he made on the first nine.
Gonzalo was left with a bitter taste in his mouth after this year’s version of THE PLAYERS. It should also be noted that on Thursday he finished the round with a putt from less than one meter out to miss the par. Harsh punishment. At the moment, it seems as though things are just not turning out as the Spanish golfer had hoped, however, if there’s one thing clear it’s that he will not give up. The PGA Tour is his dream and he’ll do whatever it takes to continue forward.
