Gonzalo Fernández Castaño did not make the cut at the Zurich Classic in New Orleans, but it’s not all bad news. Far from it. Moreover, the round yesterday at the TPC course in Louisiana is proof of an upwards trend in the Spanish golfer’s game.
Gonzalo shot a 68 in the second round of the PGA Tour tournament held in Avondale, with five birdies and just one bogey. It wasn’t enough to balance out the 75 he shot on Thursday nor to make the cut, but there are plenty of positive points to be analyzed. It’s the third 68 for Fernández Castaño in his last six rounds, a more than appealing sequence of events keeping in mind that throughout the rest of the season, he had barely shot a 68 or less on just three other occasions, three times in thirteen tournaments.
Gonzalo is playing better, adapting to the changes in his swing that he’s integrated into his game since he’s been working with Randy Smith, although he still lacks some consistency, especially on the putt. Yesterday, despite the three putt on the 18th hole (his only bogey), he putted very well, landing three birdies from more than six meters away. He could have even made a few more birdies, seeing as how he had two options from less than two meters out on the back nine. In any case, yesterdays outcome was a positive one and the objective is to try to establish some consistency with those 68 shot cards. Gonzalo’s been working on that for quite some time. And he’ll continue to work on it...The next event is THE PLAYERS Championship, the most important regular tournament of the American tour.
