Gonzalo Fernández Castaño did not get off to a great start at the RBC Heritage, PGA Tour tournament held on the Harbour Town Links Course, Hilton Head. The Spanish golfer held his ground on the first ten holes where he went head to head with the demanding course, but the round started to get complicated around the 12th hole.
A bad sequence of two bogeys and two double bogeys spread out over the 12th to the 16th holes, put Gonzalo in the position to have to pull a miracle out of his hat this Friday to be able to play through the weekend. He finished with a 77, for a total of +6. As of now, he is five shots away from making the cut, provisionally placed at +1, although it could go to +2.
Gonzalo struggled from tee to green today, an aspect of the game which is best to have fine-tuned on this technical, penalizing course in South Carolina. He caught eight fairways and just seven greens, a score that clearly reflects the tough day at the office the Madrid native had on Thursday. He was the longest hitter in this first round, but he got himself into too many problems.
Fernández Castaño will attempt to make a heroic comeback this Friday. He needs to bring it down five shots, although the advantage is that he doesn’t have anything to lose. He’ll play at six in the afternoon, Spanish Peninsular time. The leaders are Matt Every and Graeme McDowell.
