Excellent round for Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (-6) in the second session of the Shell Houston Open. The Madrid native solidified the good vibes from Thursday and, this time definitively, the good play showed through in a much more significant score, with a final card for 68 shots.
Gonzalo was slightly inconsistent off the tee, but spectacular with the irons, to the extent of catching fifteen greens and assuring that he had plenty of options for birdies. Since the rough isn't especially dense and intimidating at the Golf Club of Houston, he was almost always able to come out on top with an iron in hand to continue on again to putt in search of a birdie. He landed six. And a few more than nice shots that could have gone in...
It's true, the Spanish golfer sank two long putts for birdies, both on par 3s (holes 14 and 7, and both from more than seven meters out), but he also let various possibilities to improve his score from much more accessible distances escape out from under his fingertips (between a meter and a half to three meters), including a putt to save the par from a little more than a meter which resulted in the only bogey of the day (6th hole).
In any case, the outcome can only be considered as positive, keeping in mind that Fernández Castaño came off from missing the cut in the three previous tournaments, which means this weekend he'll start off with all of his objectives open, standing where he stands at just six shots away from the leader, novice golfer Andrew Putnam (-12).
