A good start for Gonzalo Fernández Castaño in the Shell Houston Open, with a card for 70 shots, two under par in the first round in which American golfer, Scott Piercy (-9), finished in the lead after matching the course record (63 shots), the Golf Club of Houston.
The Madrid native's game from tee to green was solid, even more than reflected in his final results, in a round which, in general, there were an abundant amount of birdies. Gonzalo managed to create nice options, but was unable to finish the job off on the greens. Although, truth be told, the clutch par he pulled off to save the 16th hole is worth noting, sinking a putt from more than three meters out.
Now, the Spanish golfer is sitting nicely on one shot above the cut. It's not a huge cushion, but the good vibes and consistency demonstrated in his long game go above and beyond and, of course, reflect a considerable improvement. Fernández Castaño doesn't cease to continue to strive for that excellent round that will really put things into place, and he wasn't far from it today...
