Gonzalo Fernández Castaño signed a card for 72 shots in the first round of the Valspar Championship, PGA Tour event that started this Thursday on the challenging Copperhead course, Innisbrook Resort, Tampa.
Gonzalo made three birdies, a double bogey and two bogeys in a round where his drive wasn't altogether accurate, although he compensated with his irons to the greens. He started on the 10th hole and it was on the first nine where practically all the commotion happened, with just four pars under his belt. On the back nine, he made one birdie and eight pars.
The Madrid native had mixed fortunes on the putt . It's true that he got both birdies on par 3s putting from five meters out, but it's not any less true that four putts slipped out from under his fingertips from less than a meter and a half away. If he would have been a little more accurate on those short putts, Gonzalo would have finished very close to the top ten.
Now, he's in 80º place in the rankings, just one shot away from the cut and seven away from the leader, English veteran, Brian Davis. This Friday he'll play in the afternoon session at 5:30 pm, Spanish Peninsular time.
