Gonzalo Fernández Castaño finished the Puerto Rico Open with a round of 73 shots for a total of two under par. The Madrid native ended up in 27º place, with a bitter taste in his mouth in the end, after a week that should be a positive one, the definitive turning point of the season.
Gonzalo made two birdies and three bogeys, the last one on the 18th hole, which always leaves a bitter sensation, especially because it's a par 5. In any case, putting the round into perspective, the results aren't bad after another complicated round of golf due to the windy conditions. The problem is that the rankings were really tight and a card over par was cause for dropping more positions than in a normal tournament. The difference of just one shot in this tournament meant in some cases a shift of up to eleven positions. In fact, Gonzalo finished just five shots away from the winner, Alex Cejka, who broke the tie with Tim Petrovic, Sam Saunders, Emiliano Grillo and Jim Curran on the first hole.
Fernández Castaño finished with his best results of the season in Puerto Rico, a top 30 which he'll attempt to solidify with another good score next week at the Valspar Championship, his third consecutive week of competition in Florida.
