Gonzalo Fernández Castaño signed off on 71 shots in the third round of the Puerto Rico Open. Another tough bout of wind on the Trump International Course in Rio Grande that the Madrid native resolved seamlessly, winning the course over and leaving himself some serious room for the win.
Gonzalo is tenth in the classification, with an accumulated three under par. He's just three shots away from the two leaders: Chris Smith and Scott Brown. A privileged position from which he'll attempt to launch one last attack this Sunday. That's where the Madrid native is, in his element, where he really likes to be the last few days of the tournament.
Fernández Castaño managed to get his long game under control this week. Despite the difficult playing conditions, the Spanish golfer is catching lots of fairways and many greens, leaving good options for birdies that he's been able to take advantage of. Today, he got three birdies and two bogeys.
He's still got to finish the job and Gonzalo knows it won't be easy. The rankings are very tight, with no less than 36 players separated by just five shots. It's going to be a long, complicated Sunday, in which it will be necessary to remain strong mentally, due to the fact that two shots up or down could mean many spots in the rankings.
Gonzalo will play this Sunday starting at 4:39 pm, Spanish local time.
