Gonzalo Fernández Castaño started the Puerto Rico open off with 73 shots, a good result keeping in mind the difficult playing conditions of the first round at the Trump International Golf Club in Rio Grande. The wind was blowing nicely in this corner of the Caribbean and just one player, Spanish golfer Rafa Cabrera Bello, was able to finish without a bogey on his card.
Gonzalo began the tournament with a bogey on the first hole. It wasn't exactly the start he had hoped for, and much less so when you come into a tournament with certain doubts after having missed the cut just one week before in the Honda Classic. Nonetheless, Fernández Castaño had it clear that a long and complicated day awaited him due to the conditions, so he strapped up and got ready to go.
He pulled off a partial of par on the next 17 holes, very commendable. He made two birdies on the 10th and the 15th and two bogeys on the 11th and the 17th. He proved to be firm and solid in his game, despite the wind, from tee to green and he would have finished with a better result had he hit the mark on a few more greens, where he clocked in almost two putts per green in regulation. Finally, a card for +1 and 41º place.
This Friday he'll play the second round and Gonzalo will start nice and early. His round begins at 7.10 am local time, 12.10 Spanish Peninsular time.
