Gonzalo Fernández Castaño made the cut at the Puerto Rico Open after turning in a card for 69 shots in the second round of the tournament. A weight was lifted from the Spanish golfer's shoulders and, above all, it put an end to an unbecoming stretch of twelve consecutive rounds of golf without finishing with less than seventy shots.
The madrid native went out to compete with the first rays of sunshine of the day and decided to confront the round full speed ahead, going after every flag at the Trump International Golf Club in Rio Grande. The strategy worked more than alright. He started on the 10th hole and between the 12th and the 17th he pulled off an extraordinary sequence of five birdies and just one bogey. A full on attack.
The playing conditions aren't easy in Puerto Rico. The wind continues to blow strongly on this Caribbean course. Thus, a round of 69, has more merit. Going from fighting to make the cut, Gonzalo has moved on to keeping a close eye on the top ten, a magnificent day with lots of advancement on Friday.
The last time Fernández Castaño finished with a round below 70 shots was in the third round of the Human Challenge, the first PGA Tour tournament of the year. There won't be many more better rounds than that of the Puerta de Hierro native.
