Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (+3) saved the cut at the Northern Trust Open after a completely unsettling round. The Spanish golfer saw himself obligated to land the ball from the edge of the green with a magical chip on the 18th to save the day...
The beginning of the round couldn't have been more disconcerting: he caught the first two fairways, but on both he needed three putts and both turned into bogeys. Two unexpected blows, those that can leave an impact on a player.
Things got even more complicated when on the next hole he missed a clear option for birdie from just over two meters away, and right after, he made his third bogey of the day on the first par 3 of the Riviera Country Club.
Little by little, he started to take control of his game, but the start of the back nine holes was also rough. A bad approach on the 10th and a chain of mistakes on the 11th which lead to two more bogeys. Things seemed to be completely out of control, because he didn't catch the greens on the 12th and the 13th either, although surprisingly he made two desperate putts from four and five meters away to save the recoveries.
The Madrid native finished the round with two really important consecutive birdies, the last of the two with that magic signature chip, and finished off a round that was way too out of control like that, in which he had missed eleven greens. Completely insane.
