Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño finished with a 72 in the first round of the Waste Management Phoenix Open, which began this Thursday at the TPC Scottsdale. The Spanish golfer made three bogeys and two birdies and currently stands at a result of +1, one shot away from the tournament provisional cut.
It wasn't an easy round of golf for Gonzalo. His long game is in the midst of fine-tuning with his new coach, Randy Smith, and the pieces still have to come together. It's important to note that there have only been five rounds of competition golf in 2015 and that changes take time.
That's why, while everything adjusts, Gonzalo continues to fight to maintain his presence in the tournaments. Even after only having caught seven fairways and nine greens, the Madrid native was able churn out a result that keeps him in the running for the cut. His short game proved to be reliable once again, with six out of nine recoveries.
Today, he'll play the second round starting at 8.42, local time in Arizona.
