It was the month of February, 2008 when Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño made his debut in a regular tournament of the PGA Tour. It had already rained. It was in Mayakoba, Mexico. And thus, the Spanish golfer set out determined to obtain the American tour card.
Today, six years later, he'll set foot on the same course, The Chameleon, for the third time in his career, but the first time with PGA Tour card in his pocket. A card earned by hard work, sweat and blood in 2013 after an excellent season and maintained by fighting hard and having faith in 2014. In a way, this reencounter with Mayakoba is sort of like a tribute to the Spanish golfer's professional career history.
Gonzalo's participation in the OHL Classic will commence this Thursday, the most hispanic tournament of the year in the PGA Tour. And not only because it's held in the Mayan Riviera where Spanish is spoken, but also because the main sponsor is also from Mexico. The owner of the OHL is Spanish entrepreneur, Juan Miguel Villar Mir.
Fernández-Castaño will open fire tomorrow starting at 5.45 pm, Spanish time, together with Michael Putnam and Chad Collins. He'll come out on the 10th hole. Gonzalo's goal is to play all four days of the tournament for the first time of the season in the United States. Two other Spanish golfers will also be making an appearance in Mayakoba: Álvaro Quirós and Jon Rahm.
