Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (PAR) began today in attempts to defend his title at the BMW Masters in Shanghai with an insufficient first round, most of all if we look at leader, Alexander Levy (-7). However, with 54 holes ahead and no cut, there's still much more to do and to tell...
Additionally, the Madrid native got good vibes during most of the day, although the end was unfortunate. In the midst of the round, Gonzalo was at the top of the rankings with a partial of -4. He went out on the 10th hole and got three birdies in a row on holes 15, 16 and 17, with a tight, organized game.
Missed a few short putts on the start of the second nine (holes 1 and 2), the first to save the par from less than a meter away, and a similar putt for birdie right after, making the Spanish golfer's game go cold, which afterwards was much more inconsistent. Finally, a double bogey on the last hole was the end point to ruin a round that was on it's way to aiming much higher. In reality, this is what Gonzalo has been struggling with all along: the search in borderline desperation for consistency.
