Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (-3) started off on the right foot at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, second tournament of the regular PGA Tour calendar 2014-2015. The Spanish golfer turned in a card for a 68, with just one bogey.
Although Fernández Castaño's game was solid, with few errors, there's no better way to stand out for an outstanding performance than with the putter in hand. And it's not just that he landed his first four birdies of the day from twelve meters out. This happened on the 12th (he started off on the 10th), but right on the hole before, the 11th, he came out nicely from one of those delicate situations that can totally influence the entire round: a good putt for par from two meters away. “I'm happy with the results. It was a fun day, without hitting the ball too well, I was still able to pull off a good card”, he commented to the PGA Tour just after finishing the round.
It's important to point out, as well, that none of the other putts for birdie that landed in the hole were from less than three and a half meters out. So, in effect, it's fair to say that his performance on the greens was excellent at the start of the TPC Summerlin. The weak point of the round was, perhaps, on the par 5s. Even Gonzalo confessed: “it was a shame that I didn't make a birdie on any of them, mostly because on all three I was in the fairway, but I complicated things with the second shots. This is something I have to refine for tomorrow”, he concluded.
