Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño’s rise in the KLM Open is as if it were a steep, climbing mountain in the Tour of Spain. The Spanish golfer finished with a 66 after a day of lots of movement on the Kennemer course, leaving him at 22nd place with a 4 under par, just three shots away from the top ten and ten from the leader, Romain Wattel.
It’s the lowest card in the European Tour for Gonzalo, since the very first round of the Final in Dubai in 2012. The lowest as far as shots, of course, not in relation to par. The Dutch course is a par 70, on which Gonzalo landed a 4 under par. This same year in 2014 he pulled off a 67 (-5 on a par 72) at the Nedbank Challenge, and in 2013 he signed three cards for a 67, all of them a par 72, in the third round of the Dubai Final, also the third of the BMW Masters and the second of the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship.
In any case, as far as total shot results, yes, it’s the lowest card of the season, equaling the others for 66 that he made in the Arnold Palmer, in the Travelers Championship and in the Canadian Open, all part of the PGA Tour.
Gonzalo came out with the eighth best card of the day on the Dutch terrain, with five birdies and just one bogey, and moved up thirty places on the scoreboard. He’s now looking ahead to Sunday. Anything that has to do with top ten would be an incredible result upon his return to the European tour. He’ll come out in the second game of the day (9.05) together with Nicolas Colsaerts and Thomas Aiken.
