The fighter instinct can't be bought, nor sold. You either have it or you don't. It can improve over time, but if it's not inherent, it's complicated to bring it out of a person. Gonzalo Fernández Castaño has it in his blood. Doesn't matter if it's the PGA Tour or the European Tour; the Deutsche Bank or the KLM, no difference. When it comes time to roll up his sleeves and dig in to the dirty work, it's full speed ahead.
Gonzalo taught everyone a lesson once again today in Holand. He made the cut, wasn't easy by any means, but he did it. He started out on the 10th, with two birdies on the 14th and the 17th to set the tone, however, the start of the second nine foretolda dismal outcome at best. He made three bogeys in a row on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th. There, he was out of the game and the tournament, with just 5 holes to go.
The Spanish golfer could have let it run away with him and give in to the circumstances, but instead, he rose to the challenge, picked his head up and ended up landing two birdies on the 6th and 7th, placing him in the cut at 55th place. Gonzalo is far from negotiating a victory with the top ten, but at least he's brought forth the chance to shine over the weekend at the place where he won his very first tournament of the European Tour.
