No rest for the weary, not even two days at home in Miami, and back 'on the road'. Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño is already in Greensboro where the Wyndham Championship starts today, PGA Tour date and preliminary tournament to the FedEX Cup playoffs.
This week will be the deciding factor as to players who will have the privilege of maintaining the American tour card, those who will not go on, and those who will have to continue fighting for a spot among others from the Web.com Tour to maintain their rights for next year. Fortunately, Gonzalo doesn't have to feel that pressure after having completed his duty successfully, securing his membership; however, there is still a lot at stake.
The Spanish golfer's goal is to at least reach the second of the four playoff tournaments, and for that he'll need to finish with a good score this week and next week in the Barclays, the jump start of the final sprint to the FedEX finish line. The second date will be the Deutsche Bank, where in order to participate, you must be among the top 100 of the FedEX after Barclays.
Gonzalo's drive and excitement to enjoy a good season finale after so much struggle and pressure to maintain the card are in his favor, the only thing against him being all the tournaments he's played thus far consecutively. The Wyndham will be his seventh week playing in a row, the longest run of his entire professional career. More or less like a musician's summer marathon tour. And it will add up to a minimum of eight, now that he is guaranteed to play in the Barclays tournament.
Gonzalo will play the first round starting at 19.25, Spanish time, together with John Rollins and Matt Bettencourt, two, for example, who as of now still don't have the PGA Tour card secured. They'll start on the 10th hole of the Sedgefield Country Club.
