Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño's first assault on Valhalla resulted in a technical tie. The Spanish golfer started the PGA Championship off with an end result of par that he struggled and fought hard for, a total of 71.
Gonzalo made eight pars and the rest divided between birdies and bogeys, five and five. It was neither a comfortable nor easy round. Two of the bogeys resulted from painful 3 putts. His putt was off again, just like in the final round on Sunday of Firestone, although he showed patience and perseverance, finishing with two birdies for a total of PAR, placing him within the cut for the time being.
The birdie on the 17th came after an excellent shot from the fairway. In fact, it was just millimeters away from being an eagle.
Whereas, the birdie on the last hole (the 18th), he landed after putting for an eagle. A fantastic final touch that could be a good sign for the second round.
Gonzalo will play on Friday in the morning, which has a better outlook as of today, although conditions could change as the forecast shows storms and rain. He'll tee off on the 10th starting at 14.05 (Spanish time).
