Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño didn't make the cut at the John Deere Classic. The second consecutive card for PAR left him out of the game at Illinois. “Play better”, were the last words scrolled across the Madrid native's epitaph, the Spanish golfer affirmed, just a few minutes after signing the card for a 71 at the TPC Deere Run.
The truth is that Gonzalo's game wasn't too bad this week, but once again, he was lacking that slight pinch of wind in his favor to continue in the fight. Yesterday, he caught more than seventy percent of the greens, pretty good numbers for someone who only needed the finishing touch to put an end to it and make a comeback. He didn't exactly leave a plethora of options for birdie, but his putt was absent yesterday right when he needed it the most. The putts on the 13th and 17th especially hurt, where he had options from one meter away, the first one for par and the second one for birdie. With those two, he would have made it this weekend. It's the first cut he's missed since May.
In any case, the John Deere is over, and now it's time to focus on the next one. Gonzalo has all eyes on the Open Championship, held next week at the Royal Liverpool course at Hoylake. The Spanish golfer returns to Europe, in hopes that the change in atmosphere will also mean a change in dynamic.
